Cluster Fly Treatment

Cluster flies are about the size of common houseflies. The most obvious difference is that they will cluster on the exterior of your home in the spring and fall. During the winter, they crawl inside. 

Browntail moth has become quite nuisance in Maine the past few years; but this is not a new pest in Maine.  Browntail Moth,  Euproctic chrysorrhoea was first established back in 1897 in Somerville, Massachusetts.  In the early 1900’s numerous efforts were made to control the pest and by the 1920’s the population was in check and under control.  Over the following 60 years, there were resurgences of the pest throughout Casco Bay, Me and Cape Cod, MA.  The population began expanding in the 80’s to some of the coastal areas an islands off of Maine and Massachusetts.  The  numbers continued to rise and spread and by 1999 the pest was found in Augusta, ME.
In 2004 & 2005 the population took a hit due to  wet springs.  Due to the wet conditions, this caused the caterpillars to huddle together, eventually catching fungal diseases which in turn helped deplete the population and  keep the population in check a few years.  Not for long, however  In 2010 the population showed an upward swing again.
Fast forward to 2019, 2020 and now 2021 the caterpillars are now very active in Midcoastal Maine and the surrounding areas.   These caterpillars are not only a nuisance, but a health risk.  The hairs on these caterpillars are toxic and can cause an itchy and painful rash.  The state continues to monitor and manage the population.
